Cooler Weather Makes for Comfy Game Play

Jane & Howard's Ann Arbor Petanque Tournament a Big Success

Photo Slideshow

This past Sunday, Howard Ando and Jane Wilkinson of the Ann Arbor Petanque Club held yet anoother stellar tournament. Beginning at around 2pm, dozens of people joined in on the merriment as we played random selected teams in three games.

Some familiar faces from the Royal Oak circuit were present (Michel & Jeannette; Danny; Arnold...) as well as a visitor from North Carolina: Bob Moyer. The Ann Arbor club boasts very skilled, and determined players as well including David, Bill, the 2 Larrys, Maury, and Gilbert. Forgive me if I left your name out, I'm terrible with names...

The champion was (or better stated: remains) Michel. Good going! We look forward to the next tournament at Ann Arbor's well-groomed, partially shaded, pistes.

Team-Abu does some Shock & Awe - stealing victory from Pat's Hands

In a surprise move, Team-Abu, at a 2-11 losing position robbed victory from Team-Pat with some bold shooting and pointing moves (Thanks Buzz!) making a 13/11 celebration for Abu and Friends.
Pow!

More Troops from Miller Canfield Swell the Petanque Ranks

The Detroit Petanque Club's ranks swelled today with new players from Miller Canfield: Clark C. & Derek P. brought over by Scott T.
"I feel confident that a future: Honigman vs. Miller Canfield tournament could arise in September" - exclaimed Jeff W.
All played very well and with this magnificent weather - we'll have plenty of games for the season.

Five Days - No Way !

VIDEO of Pat's great pointing...

Amidst a huge gathering of the Letter Carrier's Union at Cadillac Square Park today, we re-located temporarily to Campus Martius Park (next door) for our afternoon's sport. We originally played at Campus Martius Park (and before that, as the Riverwalk down near the Renaissance Center). The grounds are slightly different from what we are used to playing upon which seemed the thwart some of our players (fortunately the guys on my team were un-fazed!).

What does a 10 foot tall man, a 5 foot mime and Cantigny France have in common?

Pat is taking a nice lead in the rankings

A nice close game for most of the afternoon. The score was pretty even - until the end rounds where Pat's team pulled ahead (and then pulled in three points for the 13/8 finish).

Big thanks to the weather for being so agreeable.

Skunked! Pat & Maury make a big win!

We've all suffered a good skunking every now and then - thankfully, they're rare and far between. Maury and Pat pulled a 13/0 today against some very tough competition: the 2 Tims and Buzz.
My own game was much better today (yesterday I was the pits) - with some good shots and lucky pointings. Fred did most of the work getting those close first boules which threw Abu and Raphael off.

Rita Joins the Detroit Club

We should re-name the Detroit Petanque Club to the Honigman (and Friends) Petanque Club. Rita, observer and longtime distraction for the players finally joined the game today and just in time. She displayed an incredibly straight petanque throw which landed her boule right next to the cochonnet mutliple times. Sufficiently, in fact, to place us in a 10 to nothing spot! But a mislaid boule (on my account) pushed our opponent's boule in for a point and that began their rapid ascent... tieing the score, then passing us at 12 to 10. We finally evened things up, 12/12 and had the final ("point takes it") round. By sheer willpower we forced the win 13/12 victory. Bravo.
