Give Thanks to Red Bull

I have to thank Michelle for stopping by the piste in the "Red-Bull-Mobile". She provided all the members with a free taste of the great energy drink, and gave us just the right amount of boust to put the boules right in there all afternoon... I tried to convice her that the drink should be renamed "Red Boule!" but she didn't think the boss would go for it. ;-( Oh well, she had to go for today, but I told her she must return to play some games!

You Can't Stop Her

Joyce just can't get enough... Now she has to watch over Gregory to make sure the boules are sorted correctly, which they were. How thankful could I be to have such a concerned and helpful group of members in the club!? ...and although I don't have a picture for this, I also have to thank Maude for the great cookies she brought (as evidenced by how fast they went!)

Never Enough Promotions!

Joyce welcomes EVERYONE! She definitely takes the Promotions Director position seriously... We couldn't have hoped for a better person for the job!

Kevin Gets off his Bicycle for a Moment to Boule

Kevin leads historical bicycle tours in and around Detroit and befriended Cheryl and James during these "cyclethons"

We're happy to include him in our club and Kevin really shined today with pointing and even a great and crucial game shot!

See you on the terrain soon!

It's not all about Petanque -Sometimes we Garden

If you think Joe is just about Petanque, you're wrong. Few people know that Joe is absolutely passionate about gardening. Here we see him POINTING out a particularly nice selection of hardy mums to James (equally interested) and Maude. If you need any tips about plants, you can always catch Joe at the BORDINES NURSERY in their GREENHOUSE.

James Joins Detroit Petanque - Jesse Cheers

James (light grey sweatshirt) joined us for a few games of petanque. He was "captured" from the sidelines and convinced that playing is much more preferred than merely watching.

And VOILA! another member added tot he petanque rolls.

Bite of the Black Widow

Joe coordinated with a black-widow theme on Saturday - right down to his gloves. He earned that reputation by eating his way, point-by-point to a victorious 13.

James Catches the Sun

Experienced plombe milieu player, and soon-to-be Havanese puppy owner, James is seen here just before a shot.

Allan Brings Ian in from Ann Arbor to Play

Before long we will need to grow another club in Ann Arbor for all of the University of Michigan students and teachers. I'm glad Allan has jump started the process. Ian said he'll be bringing LARGE GROUPS down to Detroit from U. of M. to play. Thanks Ian!

Petanque is good for Kids Too

What better activity for kids than to be outside, in the fresh Fall air, socializing with other kids and friendly adults, and learning something new.

Petanque has easy rules, with lots of room (a lifetime) for experience gaining.

Gene Victorious in Today's Matches

We didn't BET my hat (and I'm thankful for that) - but Gene does look very "East-European" wearing it...

If it's Friday, then it must be Petanque

Today's contestants included, Charles, Sharon, Gene, Hal, Deric, and Jeff. TonyT showed up after the games concluded. We have quite a nice group of pointing going on, with some progressing to shooter level (Sharon, Gene, TonyT).

Gene & Jeff - Two Games Lost !

It's tough going to lose 13/6, but how about having a 12/6 lead and STILL LOSING?! Gene & Jeff lost both games fair & square to TonyT, Deric, & Sharon. Strategy Strategy Strategy

April Boules Day

Deric brought along a neighbor of his, April, who bowls but has never played petanque before. Let me tell you, she rolled in her boules within an inch VERY reliably. She has a natural pointer's talent. We (Wayne & Jeff - then Wyane left and TonyT replaced him) almost lost to them, but we caught up in the end... 13/9.

Today's Games Sponsored By Emperor Penguins

It was cold and damp, but we still had 8 people willing to play: TonyT, James, Cheryl, Deric, Jeff, and Hal (Gene and Sharon came later and had to sit out). I was teamed up with Hal and Deric for the first win: 13/6. The second game (Hal left) Deric and I lost to Cheryl's close boule, TonyT's strategy and James' shooting... 13/8.

Meet Pascal - New Member from Brussels

He doesn't speak that much English, but boy can he throw a boule! Lightening fast, he's one of the best shooters I've ever seen. Bam! Bam! Bam! He shot away each of James' boules like it was nothing. Fortunately I was teamed up with him - for the 13/0 Fanny. whew! Welcome to the club Pascal. He lives in Windsor and I think he said he'll try to make it during the week.

Club Members Requested for Assistance

Monday, November 14th @ 2:30pm - Joe, Don, Ken & Jeff return from the Miami, Florida tournament.

We will hasten directly from the airport to the boulodrome at Bordine's Nursery where we will begin the raking, weed wacking process of clearing the pistes for petanque use.

This process won't take more than a few hours, especially if you can help pitch in.

Come after work, help with the grooming, bring a rake AND YOUR BOULES... because after we groom the piste we're going to play our first games there that evening!

Detroit News Takes Close-Ups at Lunchtime

Lunchtime Petanque always includes something newsworthy. Usually it's Gene's spectacular shooting, or Sharon's magnificent pointing but today it was David Coates from the Detroit News who took our photos. More familiar with bocce, we taught him about the nuances of petanque. As you can see, Gene was relatively unflinched when the telephoto was up in his face (he got the point).

Triplettes at Lunchtime

Sharon, Jeff, and TonyT took on Gene, Deric, and David. We beat 'em fair and square (despite telephoto lenses in our faces).

Cold Weather Crew

MPC players don't stop when the temperatures drop below 50!

We're like the Energizer bunny, we just keep playing, and playing, and playing!

Two New Happy Members at MPC Piste

Nicole and her father, Maurice, came all the way from Windsor to play petanque with us, and they had such a good time that they decided to join the club.

They both did excellent, and I had a chance to play some great games with each of them;

but I won't comment on who I think is progressing more quickly... ;-)

Fun in the Fall

Got a ball, any ball!? We'll play with it! All these leaves won't stop us...

New Boulodrome Work to Commence!

Ok petanquers, this is what we have to work with this winter.

I paced it out, and we should be able to fit 4 pistes per greenhouse, that's 8 total!

Everyone break out the weed trimmers, rakes, and shovels and lets go to work! We did it once, we can do it again... Be sure to check the website for the official boulodrome-cleaning date.

Secrets Revealed!

Jimmy K thinks he's been doing some dangerous pointing these last few weeks. I finally found out how he does it... It's the Halloween candy that gives him the energy!

The Three Petanque Tenors

Over lunch on Saturday, we discovered that along with Bobby A. -- Gene and TonyT like to sing. TonyT likes to sing karaoke - Sinatra is his favorite

Next time we have a club gathering, we'll have them do the entertainment.

Jeff & Joe Instruct French Visitors in How To Play Petanque

However unlikely, it actually happened that the Detroit Petanque Club received a group of 6 visitors from a University in Windsor who were French and Spain natives. Though they've seen the game played at home, they didn't receive any real instructions until Joe and Jeff showed them this afternoon.

Cheryl 's Mini-Boules Seek the Cochon Everytime

Paul Visits the Detroit Petanque Club from Washington, D.C.

Paul is a very experienced player, having played Petanque over forty years ago, in of all places, Africa! And this long time honed skill really showed on the terrain as he shot boule after boule away with what seemed like ease... (Easy for HIM!) We hope he joins the Michigan Petanque Club tomorrow in Royal Oak (if he has time). Thanks for showing us your talents Paul -- hope you have a safe trip home.

Matthew Joins Club and Plays Exceptionally

Mr. Plombe - James

James has been playing petanque like a rock-star. His plombe shot is now so deadly accurate, you'd better HOPE and PRAY he's on your team - else you're a goner!

T'Choupi Socialized Like Crazy

It's a little difficult to concentrate and point a boule well, but Denise did an admirable job, with T'Choupi tied to her hip.

Lots of Fun for Everyone at Campus Martius

Lunch Break for the Petanquers at au bon pain

Denise and T'Choupi joined Gene, Sharon, Cheryl, James, Joe, Tony and Jeff for a little lunch break before venturing back out to the piste. The food in au bon pain is VERY tasty.

Start them Young!

Joe helped these kids to learn a little something new...

...and in a few years they'll be beating us all !!!

Campus Martius Park had Lots of Boule-Play

The visiting group of 5 French (and 1 Spanish) college student, plus Jesse, Paul (from Washington, D.C. Petanque) and all of the others really made for a surprisingly full group of boule piste play (especially during a semi-chilly day.

Lunchtime Petanque Grows Popular Despite the Chill

Today's members: Jeff, Tony, Gene, Sharon, David, Derrick, Donnell, James, and Mike (some watched - the first 4 played) at the lunchtime petanque game.

Sharon and Jeff were teamed up and took Tony & Gene in the first game, 13/6 For the second game, it wasn't as easy, but Sharon's great pointing, and a few good plombe shots (yes shots) - had us in another win: 13/11

My French mother-in-law, knowing how much I love pétanque, told me that she couldn't resist sending me this postcard she'd run across during her recent visit to Provence. If she'd really cared, she would have found one with a pointer's boule rather than a shooter's boule...

David and Jeff Win By a Margin

It was close going, James was laying in plombe shots like a 25 year expert, and TonyT was rolling in his boules like they had homing devices in them, but David and Jeff were holding fast, working their rounds, point-by-point.

Finally, a lucky break, 4 points won, and it was all over. We were at 12 and we didn't look back.

Temperatures Dipping to Low 50's This Weekend

May I suggest this arctic-style hat to keep you toasty warm for the coming cold season? As for the metal boules, perhaps some thinsulate gloves, and if you're really smart, stick them in a fannybag alongside some of those chemical warmer pouches (they'll transfer the heat to the boule and you'll be playing comfy!).

Ice Rink Being Installed at Campus Martius Park

Winter approaches, and before long, there will be skaters whizzing around what was once (still is, beneath all of that styrofoam!) the North Lawn at Campus Martius Park. Work crews are busy installing the rink sections, and so far they have the entire lawn covered. Next will come the side walls and refrigerant tubing. As such, the usual spot where we play is off-bounds. That's okay, because we can all play in the gravel path area just South of au bon pain.

Craigslist and Petanque

I noticed this in the Missed Connections of the Detroit Craigslist (an online board for posting all kinds of stuff).

You were holding 3 metal balls in a leather strap
You, Male, in your 40's, and you were holding these cool looking shiny metal balls in a leather strap. I saw you playing some really neat looking sport at Campus Martius on Saturday. Wow! What a neat athlete you are. Me, thin, nordic looks, 32. I'll see you there next Saturday !

So the question is which one of you is she talking about?

Conclusion in the Best of Nine Series Goes to Team LaChance

Michigan Petanque Sport Central News Agency 2005-10-18

There was quite a battle that took place up last night in Rochester. Team Z mounted a significant challenge to Team LaChance in the fifteenth Best of Nine series.

Joe Zajac leapt forward to a commanding three-games-to-zero versus LaChance, on the basis of tight pointing and precision shooting. Joe Zajac even managed an unprecedented fanny against LaChance. Of course, after a fleeting moment of victory, he called daily for more bouts with his opponent. After a second day of tough play, the match stood at four games to one in favor of Team Z. With excellent pointing, often with all three balls within 20cm of the bouchon, and with surgical movements of the bouchon, moving it into the cluster of his own boules, we at MPSCNA thought Zajac would win for sure.

But it was not to be. After a third night of play, LaChance closed the gap (four games to four). We have admit, one of those games was lost by Team Z due to bad luck: Hitting the bouchon with his final boule ricocheting the bouchon into LaChance's cluster of boules twice, costing Zajac five points.

Night four, the closing of the Best of Nine, was a hard fought match. The score seesawed up the points' ladder: 2-0, 2-2, 2-3, 5-3 during which Zajac made a rare and perfect point - his three boules and the bouchon ending up in a solid cluster. Still, somehow, Team LaChance pulled to the fore and put Zajac down with a final score of 11-13.

The suspense in the games is drawing new stadium goers into the Petanque audience. Of course, the fifteenth victory in favor of Team LaChance added to his impressive string of unbroken wins in this Best of Nine series.

Team Z is chipping steadily away at LaChance's advantage. It will not be long until we will be reporting a victory for Team Z. In the meantime, there will be cliff-hanging matches on the pistes of Rochester.

Frank Tries Out Boule at Campus Martius

It just goes to show you that if you venture outside the office during lunchtime, you'll never know what you'll learn new...

Frank was walking by this afternoon, and spotted TonyT, Gene, Sharon, Renee and Jeff playing boule. He joined us for a few rounds and played well immediately. I'm he's interested and will return. The best part is that he wears bowties, just like me (Jeff). Our new logo? perhaps!

Thanks Romain - Wait a moment, HOW MUCH?!

Good Boy
Originally uploaded by JeffreyWiden.
Romain played puppy-sitter for T'Choupi on Sunday. The two played around like the two rascals they are, and of course, many of the ladies came over to the two boys to chat.

What I didn't realize, until too late, was the $350 puppy-sitting bill Romain handed to me after "his job was complete" Oi Oi Oi

JOE: anything left in the MPC coffers?

Didierjean Brothers Rule the Piste

Brothers
Originally uploaded by JeffreyWiden.
I haven't been back to the Royal Oak piste in quite a while, and it was great to play against/with my friends. Greg and Cyrille really display the best part of petanque - the brotherly cooperation (teamwork) required to get the job done.

Stranger Spotted on MPC Piste

Motion sensors and security camera's caught this stranger the moment he stepped onto the MPC piste... If you see this person again, please contact the authorities.

Roland's Assessment

Assessment
Originally uploaded by JeffreyWiden.
Checking the boule placement is crucial as strategy plays a siginicant role in playing petanque well.

Many times, an out-classed team can win (or nearly win) simply by playing thier boules properly.

Romain Put on T'Choupi Duty

Romain just took a quick break, and Jeff immediately put him to work with T'Choupi watching duty... Here you can see that T'Choupi is jealously watching intently as Marley roams the piste untethered! "Some day I'll be as big as him!"

Kitty points in Another Close Boule

Melissa swears by the crouching method. It is admittedly tough on the leg muscles, but allows you to view the line of play and any interruptions for your boule's passage to it's goal.

New Players Jump Right into the Petanque Action

It's an easy game to learn, and with time, become quite a skilled player. Plus there's the added social benefit (something you're not going to get with video games!)

These guys were playing like superstars at Campus Martius Park. I was teamed up with (& against) Mike and let me tell you, he can slip that boule right against the cochon before you can whisper: "13? Already?!"

Renee Points with Superstitious Gesticulations

You can really depend upon Renne to roll in the close point, and the point-shot. She has a "warm-up" move just before her throw that'll really amuse you. BUT, when she throws that boule, WATCH OUT!

Jeff Almost Gets Hauled Away

Officer Dean was ready to play (and says he'll try it out off-duty), but duty comes before play so he just tried out the feel of swinging a good boule throw... I had Jeff stand back, because I didn't want him too close to that gun since I taunted him by wearing my medal from last week's tournament! I didn't want any trouble breaking out! ;-)

Cmpus Martius Park Has Record Turnout!

Here he is describing to al of the new players how petanque boules are scored.... he had his hands full today! But you'll always see a big smile on both of our faces after so much productive work!

Melissa's Computer Hacked - Screensaver Discovered!

"It was relatively easy," Jeppy confided, "Melissa used ROMAIN as her main password, and from there it was easy to see what photo she was using as her screensaver."

Other embarrassing information about Melissa is up for sale on E-Bay...

More attention

The screensaver on my work computer has captured the attention of my co-workers. Now they want to learn more about petanque.

That is on top of some aquaintances downtown that also want to come try their hands at petanque. So I just tell them about the club meetings and recommend they show up. Considering I only started playing in August, it is strange to be an ambassador of the game. (Yes, only August. I checked the date on the first time I took photos - August 6th)

And no this is not the photo on my work computer. And NO, I won't tell you which photo is. I'll leave that up to your very active imaginations.

Jeppy and TonyT played Tete a Tete at Campus Today

TonyT beat Jeppy in 2 out of the three games played on this beautiful day at Campus Martius Park. "I'm not complaining because TonyT is my tournament partner - so if he improves, we BOTH do better!"

TonyT is Concentrating on Shooting

an excellent pointer, now TonyT is focusing his skills towards becoming a better shooter. Today's games really showed me he's been learning a great deal from the Didierjeans, and Dan.

Another MPC Member Coaxed into Dangerous Activities

First Bobby and Greg in ice hockey, and now TANDEM SKYDIVING?! Dan and Melissa took the plunge yesterday at Willow Run Airport by engaging in yet more risky behaviour. No doubt Melissa is trying to weaken the MPC ability to compete well in the next tournament.

Dan only suffered a minor fracture - and may be able to play boule in 2-3 months time.

How to beat the chill

Midwest Petanque Championships
Originally uploaded by UrbanTiki.
With Saturday a cold and windy day, we were all trying to keep our boules warm. Nothing worse than a cold boule. Okay, maybe there is but cold boules are definitely not fun.

For the most part, we were keeping the boules in the pockets of our coats. Some even played with a hand in the pocket to keep the extra boule from falling out.

MPC Starts Training Members Younger!

Eli lives right by our piste in Royal Oak, and always liked watching the club play. Joe gave him a set of boules, and started up his training, and he got 3 solid good games in! I'm sorry Brandon (of DPC), he's got one year on you! He's only 7! He's already training for that "Most Improved Player" award you won on Saturday!

Another New MPC Member is Addicted

Patti has seen us in the past in the Park in Royal Oak, and finally had to try a game of petanque... We brought the boules out, and she put them right at the cochon! "I'm practically an expert", I think I heard her say. And after 1 game, she said "Let's play again." Not to mention that now MPC has 2 dogs to DPC's 1. We've already started planning our assault on T'Choupi! (Sorry Jeff!, MPC will take your medals, "and your little dog too!" ;-)

You Have to Have Good Music!

I don't know how he did it, but Mike had enough wind in him to play almost all day on his sax... He turned some heads, excited our visitors, calmed down our pointers, and I think he even helped my game in winning the Consolante! Don't think its funny when he shows up with me in my next tournament!

Fueled for Boules

We all couldn't have played for the rest of the day if it weren't for the owner of Au Bon Pain, Gerry, who gave all our hard-core, cold-weather bearing petanquers some warm soup and a great baguette sandwich! Although we're warriors on the court, we all come together after the games to enjoy each other's company...

Let's Plan for Future Tournaments !!!

Midwest Petanque Championships
Originally uploaded by UrbanTiki.
Okay team, 24 hours has passed, we've rested enough. Let's start thinking about our next event. If anyone has suggestions, let us know. If we can squeeze in another tournament before it gets too cold - let's go for it. Perhaps Belle Isle? We could BBQ there AND play petanque on a baseball field. I still can't believe how GREAT Sunday's weather was (as compared with Saturday), but lots of us are petanque die-hards, and we'll play until the cochon is lost in the snow. I'd also like to have some sort of season get together (with food). Ideas? Post 'em, Comment 'em E-Mail them.

Joe Wins the Consolante Finals

As I hung the medal on Joe's neck, I knew Joe was smirking (without my even looking) - and I can only hope to win back my props down in Miami (November 11th). No doubt he'll be wearing his medal everytime I see him...

Andre Joined Us on Thursday Afternoon

Andre was welcomed into the club play this afternoon at Campus Martius - and he really took to the game, learned the rules, and played exceptionally good petanque as a pointer.

It looks like Brandon, Marcus and Andre may have a nice triplette team going.

Fanny Rule Will Be Enforced at Competition

As official enforcer of the Fanny Rule -- all teams that lose a game 13/0 must submit and be photographed.

Tony, Jeff, and Gloria are Ready to Win Big

In a show of family loyalty, when my wife Denise had to opt out of the competition, her mom, Gloria stepped up to the piste. Welcome Gloria!

"I've played against Gloria numerous times and she is an extremely reliable pointer," announced Jeff, "and I have the utmost confidence in my triplette team taking it all on Saturday!"

Tired players

Sunday was a semi-marathon of petanque with some of us playing to 7pm. Towards the end, our exhaustion began to show, though a periodic strong shot or point did occur.

After also playing on Saturday, my elbow and wrist were both hurting last night. I wonder if there is such a thing as "petanque elbow."

And yes, as was repeatedly predicted on Sunday, I slept quite well last night.

"Romain"-ing Around

Romain was "woo-ing" all the ladies today, that's for sure! ...and not just with his petanque play. And dispite the distractions, he still managed to put points in there! Some day I hope to be like him!

Eric Needs to Grow Up!

It wasn't quite that Eric couldn't point today, it was that he had to complain that he wanted a "big chair" like all the other "important petanque players" had! Don't worry Eric, Maude said you can upgrade to a Big Boys' chair if you make it to the finals next weekend...

MPC is on cruise control...

Its great to see everyone having such a good time... and having such a consistent turnout week after week makes it that much better! The courts were full, and the games were good. How much more can you ask for?

Alliance Francaise Members Stop By

Anna Maria (left), and her daughter-in-law, Ann, are already ready to go for next weekend's tournament... They had a great time, and they think they're both professionals now! We'll see next Saturday! (...although, after playing with Anna Maria, I do get a bit worried with her dangerously accurate pointing!)

Poissonnette

Denise is practicing for Saturday and since T'Choupi grabbed the cochon, we used his favorite rubber fish as our cochonnette (or is it poissonnette?)

The pigeons and sparrows kept visiting the piste. More than a few times they were surprised by a boule headed their way. But they kept returning.

Gregory came to check out the Campus Martius surface before the tournament. It was the first time some DPC members had seen him shoot. A few thought they could take him but eventually determined that was not the case. And much like we all do, they became resigned to him shooting out a well placed boule.

Good thing he and Cyrille are on my team next weekend.

Someone brought along bocce balls to Campus Martius. Every once in a while, someone would try using the bocce balls but we weren't overly successful. Better stick with petanque.

Michael Visits Club - Learns Petanque

Dave Jonker (famous for his Logger's Tape Measure) points, while newest member, Michael (far right) looks on.

Gene uses Prayer to Help His pointing

At first I thought it was Gene joking, but when his success at shooting upped, I starting looking for a strand for myself!

Gene and Sharon Plot Their Next Moves

These guys are always taking extra precautions in their boule playing. I really respect the time they take in their practice, and in their strategy making.

Gregory and Melissa Plan Their Next Attack on the Cochon

Good friends Melissa and Gregory were teamed up in plenty of games. This deadly duo used their super-sneaky "HIT THE COCHON" method of gameplay. So watch for it during your tournament.

Today's Detroit Petanque Club was a great success. We were joined by lots of members of the Michigan Petanque Club who wanted to test out the surface for October's tournament on the 8th.
